Discover Vinson

Part of 7 summits challenge

The "Seven Summits" is the name given to highest points of the seven continents of the world. Five of the seven peaks on the list are unambiguous: Everest, Aconcagua, Denali, Kilimanjaro and Vinson. Consensus today is very clearly behind Elbrus and Carstensz as the other two members of this exclusive club, there is some disagreement as to what constitutes the high points of Europe and the Australia/Oceania continent. Over 100 climbers have now done the Seven Summits, and these days it has become a popular quest.

Unique wildlife

The most abundant and best known animals from the southern continent, penguins, whales seals, albatrosses, other seabirds and a range of invertebrates you may have not heard of such as krill which form the basis of the Antarctic food web. Most of the animals of the south polar region are seasonal visitors, conditions are just too hard for most animals to live there in the winter. If you are lucky, you might get a glimpse of penguins ot other seabirds.

Challenging and pushing boundaries

Even though Vinson is not considered a technically difficult peak, the mountain is high, temperatures are well below freezing, and the area is extremely remote. Those wishing to embark on this unique journey should possess previously established climbing skills and be prepared for harsh conditions of extreme cold and, at times, ferocious winds.

Comfortable Base Camps

Vinson Base Camps provide a warm welcome to the frozen landscape. The climbers will have access to a heated and insulated dining hall, where they'll eat all meals. It is also a great place to hang out, read a book, or talk with other explorers. The Camps are composed of large "Weatherhaven tents that provide comfortable dining and resting areas. Should you need to spend some days at Union Glacier or Vinson Base Camp, you will sleep in tents and, if possible, explore the surrounding regions with a guide.
