Mount Kosciuszko / Tar Gan Gil

Mount Kosciuszko (nicknamed "Kozzy") is the highest mountain on the flattest and smallest continent - Australia. The aboriginal name for the peak is Tar Gan Gil. Whilst lower than Carstenz Pyramid in West Papua, Mt Kosciuszko is still on the essential 'Seven Summits' list for the majority of mountaineers.

7 summits challenge

The "Seven Summits" is the name given to highest points of the seven continents of the world. Five of the seven peaks on the list are unambiguous: Everest, Aconcagua, Denali, Kilimanjaro and Vinson. Consensus today is very clearly behind Elbrus and Carstensz as the other two members of this exclusive club, there is some disagreement as to what constitutes the highest points of Europe and the Australia/Oceania continent. Whilst lower than Carstenz Pyramid in West Papua, Mt Kosciuszko is still on the traditional 7 summits list for most mountaineers as the highest point of Australia. Over 100 climbers have now done the Seven Summits, and these days it has become a popular quest.

Unique Flora & Fauna

Although not much of a mountaineering peak because of its relatively low altitude and gentle slopes, Kosciuszko is located in one of the most beautiful national parks in the world. Its alpine and sub-alpine areas contain rare plant species found nowhere else in the world.
Most of Mt Kosciuszko is covered by alpine woodlands, mostly covered by the tree known as Snow Gum. In the southern wilderness areas the large Chinese Elm has become quite a common tree.
Kosciuszko National park has nine separate wilderness areas with different types of endangered wildlife such as the Corroboree Frog, the Mountain Pygmy Possum and other animals.

Get acquainted with the alpine world

Australia is one of the few countries where the climb up the country's highest mountain is nothing more than a rather pleasant 6-km walk from the top of a nearby chairlift at Thredbo village. An equally attractive way to reach the top of the continent is via a pleasant, easy 9-km walk from Charlotte Pass. So, if you didn't know how to get acqainted with the world of alpine - this is a good point to start!

Connect with yourself

Climbing Kosciuszko is the best opportunity to re-connect with yourself. Daily lives are too much of a clutter that we forget to spend time with ourselves, and there's always something in the foreground to keep us occupied. Kosciuszko will give you a perfect setting to tap into the calm inside of you.

Relaxing Starry Nights

Experience the wild beauty of the winter alpine environment and watch the sunset over snow covered mountains before you settle down for the night in your warm sleeping bag. Nowhere else in the world will you make such special photos with sky full of stars.

Reaching the Summit of Mount Kosciuszko

There are three main walking tracks that lead to the summit of Mount Kosciuszko:
1. Thredbo to Mount Kosciuszko Walk,
2. Mount Kosciuszko Summit Walk
3. Main Range Walking Track.

The shortest one is Thredbo to Mount Kosciuszko walk (13km long) and the most challenging one is a 22km circuit walk. All three walking tracks intersect at Rawson Pass, close to the summit of Mount Kosciuszko, so there is an option to combine sections of the walks.

4. Hannel's Spur TrackThere is in fact a fourth walking track to the peak of Mt Kosciuszko. The very steep 15km long Hannel's Spur Track is the original route that Strzelecki followed in 1840 to reach the summit. The badly overgrown Hannel's Spur Track is Australia's biggest vertical ascent of 1800m and is really for experienced hikers only.

Kosciuszko is the easiest summit to climb in summer with good conditions - it is rather a pleasant walk, so you don't really need a guide. Just take a map and make a pleasant 2-hour self-guided hike.Yet in winter we'd rather recommend you to climb Kosciuszko with a guide as the weather can be very varied and you may need to stay in the emergency memorial hut in case of blizzards and be prepared for the unexpected - there are Antarctic Blizzards once a week. One American said it was the second hardest of the seven summits to climb. He came the first winter after completing all the other 7 summits and only had one day & couldn't go with the blizzard, even with lots experience & equipment, so he flew back to US & came the next year allowed a week for winter climb.
